Donald Trump becomes President Today, what should investors DO NOW?

US President-Elect Donald Trump will be inaugurated officially as the President of the United States later today United States time. The position of the US President is always thought to be the position of the most powerful person on earth. Inevitably so. And we have read and heard of President Trump’s views on China, TPP, Climate change and NATO. Some of Trump’s views seem strong. The question is whether these will translate into formal US positions? And if so, what are the larger implications to global economies and to global stocks markets?

How has this investment of mine perform?

In January last year, I deposited a good amount of monies in a one-year fixed deposit of a bank offering interest rate of close to 2%. That was at a time when banks were dangling carrots of higher interest rates to retail savers. A year now, from what I have been reading, the fixed-term interests have not been as appealing as those a year ago. Overall, though the interest earned from my fixed deposit a year ago is very very humble, I am satisfied as it is an investment without the risks associated with equities. It is a diversification strategies of putting one’s monies in different investment vehicles. It is a strategy of a low risk, low return on one’s savings.

Customary for every Chinese New Year, Singapore Stocks Investing will discuss the Singapore stocks which investors can consider for the Chinese New Year. Unlike the stock picks where it comes to a brand new year which are driven by analysts, the stock picks for the Chinese New Year are mostly based on forecasts by Fengshui experts. For this post, let me discuss MY very own take of stocks to consider for Chinese New Year.

The STI is at 3,025; what should investors DO NOW?

The Singapore Stocks markets benchmark indicator is on a good high of 3,025. Some analysts said that going forward, the STI should still advance. One bullish analyst even predicted that the STI might go into the 4,000 mark. All the analysts said are based on their own “crystal ball” and we should only know how accurate their predictions are at the end of the year.

We are into the first two weeks of Year 2017. How is your working life so far? I asked as I believe most of us are employees and hence we spend a lot of time at work. I asked as most of us have one main source of income for which we spend most of our working hours at.

To believe in the cause of a stock is good but it is a double-edged sword. Some companies like to paint such a beautiful growth story that has investors convicted on the stocks in a speculative way. The investors buy these stocks only to see the price of the stock head south. But on the other end of the spectrum, if one has strong good conviction in a stock, he will remain undistracted and hold the stock long enough to reap profits. So how do we have strong conviction in the stocks we buy? I believe one good way of being a strong believer in the cause of a stock is if you are a user or consumer of the products and services and you like what you consume.

The STI has been rising ever since the beginning of the year to the 3,000 level. This has had some analysts saying that the STI is going into a bull run. Indeed if we are to compare the performance of the Singapore stocks markets at the beginning of this month to that of Year 2016 where the global stocks markets were shaped by China’s stock markets, there is optimism among Singapore investors. Especially so when year 2016 is quite flattish in terms of local stocks markets performance.

I chanced upon an article of Singapore stocks picks by some financial institutions in a local newspapers. No surprise since we are now in a season of “stock picks for Year 2017” which pretty characterizes the beginning of a year. Already, there is a plethora of Singapore stocks recommendations on the internet. But I do believe that retail investors do embrace such stock recommendation reports as they might serve as a guide for them in their investing for the year ahead. The important thing for retail investors is to scrutinize the underlying rationale of the analyst bullish recommendation and see whether investors believe in the business case. I share the six stocks from the article which I read below and their target prices.

I have shared with readers some 30 Singapore stocks recommended by various stock analysts in this previous post with Global Logistics Properties, ST Engineering and Venture Corp garnering more than two analysts picks each. Today, I will update my list with the following stocks picks for Year 2017 by RHB, there are nine stock picks:

In my post yesterday, I shared about eight Singapore stocks, each having a market capitalization of more than $1 billion, which are trading at lows. How lows is low? Well, I took as a rough gauge, within 5% from the 52-weeks low of the stock. Beside, each of the eight stocks pays a fixed dividend yield of more than 5%. The above attributes of the stocks seems an attractive proposition to investors, isn’t it? You may want to refer to the post here if you have not read it.

There are currently 8 Singapore stocks, each having a market capitalization of more than $1 billion satisfying the following criteria:

a) the stock is trading at less than 5% from its 52-week low and

b) the stock is offering more than 5% dividends yields

Some investors like billion-cap stocks as the companies behind the stocks are perceived to have some form of market size and fundamentals. And one way they might want to invest in these stocks is to invest in them when they are trading at lows like in criterion
a) above when the stock is trading at less than 5% from its 52-week low. At the same time, investors also want to be paid some dividends while holding the stocks. At the current market rate, a dividend rate of more than 5% seems pretty decent.
