Dear readers, it has been a long time since I last shared with readers on my reading of the stocks markets. My current take on the stocks markets is that beside some uptick in oil prices, there are not many positive catalysts on the macro front to drive the markets higher. Against this backdrop, company-specific earnings reports will continue to drive the prices of some stocks though eventually the effects arising from any good earnings reports will still take cue from the broader markets.

Dear readers, yesterday it was reported that SIAS had raised questions about Ms Olivia Lum’s remuneration as CEO of Hyflux amid financial troubles at the company. It was reported that Ms Olivia had received over S$60 million in dividends from her 34% ordinary shareholding in Hyflux and that she earned between S$0.75m to S$1m in year 2017. The reports had me curious about just how much is Ms Olivia’s net worth just from her shareholdings in Hyflux alone?

Dear readers, US President Donald Trump announced at 2pm 8 May 2018 (US time) while many of us were asleep that US would pull out of the Iran nuclear agreement and to impose “powerful” economic sanctions on Teheran. Oil prices did not rally after Trump’s announcement though there was some price volatility in oil prices before the announcement. Analysts thought that pretty much, the above move has already been earlier factored in the recent higher oil prices by traders and more importantly, Iranian oil production would unlikely be impacted by US pulling out of the agreement unless Donald Trump can convince other allies to reimpose sanctions.
