SPEAKER OF PARLIAMENT ANNUAL SALARY:$550,000 OR $1.1 MILLION?

Dear readers, near the end of the Singapore Budget Debate 2018, there were questions by the MPs on Ministerial Salaries to which it was announced that there would not be further increases to the Ministerial Salaries. Yesterday’s The Straits Times Article also carried an article with more details of the Ministerial Salaries. I managed to find the article online and it could be viewed here .

What surprised me was reading that a full-time Speaker currently gets $1,100,000 since the number in my mind is $550,000. And I recall that the Speaker’s salary is also one of the things folks talk about when the former Minister Tan Chuan-Jin was appointed to the current Speaker, I mean to be frank, some folks talked about Mr Tan getting a pay reduction of at least 50% from a minimum Ministerial entry-grade MR4 salary of $1,100,000 to the Speaker’s salary of $550,000. I was thus confused when I read The Straits Time article.

As curious as always, I searched the internet to find out more and came across a link by the Public Services Division  . After reading both The Straits Times article as aforementioned and the above Public Services Division link, all my doubts were clear since I garnered the following:

A full-time Speaker gets an annual salary of $1,100,000 and the Public Services Division website states that the Parliament currently applies a 50% discount to the annual salary of both Speaker and Deputy Speaker as they are not full-time positions.
