WHY THIS SINGAPORE ENTREPRENEUR MADE TOM K CRY?

Dear readers, Season 4 of “Hear Me Out” debuted on Channel 8 on Sunday nights recently. The weekly episode has on the programme eminent people from all professions and walks of life. Last Sunday (2 Mar 2018), the show had Mr Toh Soon Huat, Chairman of Sian Chay Medical Institute. For those who associate Mr Toh more to the business and investing fraternity, yes, Mr Toh was the former top executive of Novena Holdings before it delisted. Mr Toh is also currently a substantial shareholder in some of Singapore’s listed companies. However, Mr Toh today is more well-known of his involvement in the charity scene especially in his Chairman role of Sian Chay Medical Institute.

While Mr Toh related his story which was a typical rags to riches story, what stood out for me is his belief in doing charity and this thinking that everybody should do some charitable acts, no matter what station in life he or she is at. I share very much Mr Toh’s belief that good health is the most invaluable gift one can have; wealth is not the most important aspect in life and that one should endeavour to help the needy of our community in whatever small ways we could. I was pretty very much touched at Mr Toh’s frank sharing in the show that everyday, many people are caught up in the rat race, “chasing” for more and more monies but neglecting to ask ourselves what we could do to help the community. I was very touched for Mr Toh’s sharing on national TV since I have personally experienced in the workplace the corporate rat race and have watched how some of my colleagues have seemed to chase for more monies and promotions at an unbalanced and unfriendly way.

I appreciate Mr Toh’s candid sharing as it is a reminder to many of us that monies, though are important are all just a means to an end. I will like to end this post by sharing another quote which I like about Living and that is:

To Live, To Love, To Learn and To leave a Legacy.
